Are gloves Food Safe?
The longer gloves are worn, the more likely it is that their effectiveness as a barrier will be undermined.Numerous studies have suggested that it's best to replace gloves every two hours for processed foods to prevent potential scratches that can't be seen.
In fact, this is only part of the story, and the consequences of improper use of gloves in the food service industry may be more serious than the leakage of gloves.
A British study concluded that people who wear gloves are more likely to touch food or ingredients with their hands than with their bare hands.In this way, gloves can become a point of cross-contamination.Chefs should replace or disinfect their gloves when handling different food ingredients, such as vegetables and meat, to prevent cross-contamination.
This is a very tedious process, including the following five steps:
1. Soak the gloved hand in 0.5% sodium hypochlorite solution
2. Remove gloves from the disinfectant and soak for 10 minutes
3. Wash the glove hands inside and out with soapy water
4. Thoroughly rinse
5. Apply pressure to the inside of the glove to detect whether there is any leakage point.
However, we still think gloves are one of the protective measures against food contamination.
Other protective measures include hair nets, cleaning equipment, effective rules and regulations, food protection and proper work clothing.
